Multi-State Tax

Moved from California to Nevada?

Nevada has no state income tax — but the year you move, California still expects a return. We prepare your California part-year or nonresident return so California taxes only the income it should, and help you document your move.

The year you move

Getting the split right

In your move year you’re generally a California resident for part of the year and a Nevada resident for the rest. Income earned while you lived in California is usually taxable there; most income earned after you became a Nevada resident is not — with important exceptions, like income from California sources such as rental property or work performed in California.

California looks closely at whether a move is real. Where you live, work, bank, vote, register vehicles and keep your closest ties all matter. We help you understand which facts support your Nevada residency and what records to keep.

  • California part-year returnsCorrectly allocating wages, business income, investments and gains between the two states.
  • Nonresident returns in later yearsFor ongoing California-source income such as rentals or a California business.
  • Residency documentationA practical checklist of the records that support your move.
  • Planning before you moveTiming of bonuses, stock sales or a business sale around your move date.

Common Questions

California-to-Nevada FAQs

Do I still file a California return after moving to Nevada?

For the year you move, usually yes — as a part-year resident. In later years you may still need a nonresident California return if you have California-source income, such as rental property or work performed in California.

Does Nevada have a state income tax?

No. Nevada does not tax individual income, so once you are a Nevada resident your federal return is typically your main filing — unless you have income sourced to another state.

Can you help if I already moved last year?

Yes. We can prepare or review your part-year return and, if needed, amend prior-year returns that were filed incorrectly.
